If you're an art major trying to go through your fine art history class or just an addict, or someone looking for full general knowledge, this could be a good starting signal.

If you're serious about art criticism and theory yous should check "Art since 1900" by Foster et al. That'south an excellent starting point.

It'southward a very good start for somebody new to the history of Modern Art and a guide that I will come back to as I notice new interests (I only read about the artistic movements in the 19th Century leading to modern currents in fine art and about my two favorites: Impressionism and Art Nouveau. Read this for my modern art class... for it being so expensive I wouldn't accept expected so many blackness and white photgraphs...The text for this volume is mediocre only it covers then much fourth dimension that I judge its difficult to get into any real detail... text generally focusing loosely on the style of the paintings depicted in the book but gives a small amount of general background info on artists...The book also comes off equally pretentious and opinionated in places, which lost information technology major credibility points with me… and so I Read this for my modernistic art class... for it being so expensive I wouldn't have expected so many black and white photgraphs...The text for this book is mediocre but it covers so much fourth dimension that I guess its hard to go into whatever real particular... text mostly focusing loosely on the manner of the paintings depicted in the volume but gives a minor corporeality of full general background info on artists...The volume likewise comes off every bit pretentious and opinionated in places, which lost it major credibility points with me… and so I would not recommend this book for new comers to modernistic art… ...more

After this book sitting around for years, I decided to really read it from comprehend to embrace. Not much depth... but, what can you expect in a book about THE HISTORY OF MODERN ART. Not much depth is what you can look.

Perhaps this book is used for classes. Hopefully with supplemental texts.

Well, I believe it is kind of incommunicable to read it all. But I am always reading that book, and I will proceed reading for long years.

A beautiful book full with photos of all kinds of fine art.
Sometimes the information is kinda dense and there are alot of artists mentioned.

H H Arnason's History of Modernistic Art is certainly worth reading. Fifty-fifty if you accept no involvement in fine art, y'all volition at least benefit from the weightlifting. And it is hither the H H Arnason's work excels, because the author provides carefully constructed, succinct descriptions of manner, motivation and form, aslope potted critiques of each illustrated work.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the book is how the author juxtaposes is the apparently increasing tendency for art to nowadays protest within the context of having to market a production. The inter-relationships betwixt individual, community, commercialism, mass production, consumerism and objectification recur throughout the text, and the comments are always enlightening. Cracking, although it could be a flake deeper in some places, although there is a very even distribution of information among the works covered past this volume. Useful in classes and it came to a very good apply by me.

An expensive textbook for my art history class. To be honest, I don't like the writing style of the writer because when you accept to memorize something, you'll detect you need to rewrite nigh everything....

However, if you want to sympathize thoroughly about mod art, the book is a skillful pick.
